Frequently Asked Questions
Is Acupunture Painful?
Acupuncture is not at all like getting an injection or taking blood. Acupuncture needles are about the diameter of a hair and are very fine and flexible. People experience acupuncture needling differently. Most patients feel only minimal pain as the needles are inserted; some feel no pain at all.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
One of the great advantages of acupuncture is the infrequent occurrence of serious side effects. There is no risk of infection from the treatments. Only single-use sterile packaged needles are used.
What Should I Expect During a Treatment?
Acupuncture needles are very thin and not hollow like injection needles. They are all individually packed and disposable. Most people receive acupuncture treatment lying down, although a seated position is sometimes used. Dr. Shao will guide you and help you relax and receive the most benefit from treatment.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Each patient is unique. The number and frequency of treatments will vary from patient to patient. Some symptoms are relieved after the first treatment; while others may take four to ten treatments. While a specific problem is being worked on, you may visit your acupuncturist once or twice a week, and gradually reduce the frequency to once or twice a month.
