Laboratory Testing San Diego

Lab Tests

A variety of lab tests are offered at Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine. We use the most respected, innovative laboratories in the world. Standard blood and urine testing, cutting edge saliva hormone testing, comprehensive stool analysis, heavy metal testing, vitamin and mineral blood analysis, food and environmental sensitivity testing, and many other useful tests are available. An overview of the various tests is provided below.

Blood and Urine

Includes standard blood and urine tests to check blood sugar, electrolytes, liver function, thyroid function, kidney function, immune system markers, anemia, infection, and other standard markers.

Hormone Testing
Saliva, blood or urine tests are used to test a wide spectrum of hormone levels for people of all ages. Examples of hormones tested include estrogens, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, thyroid panel and several others.

Amino Acid Analysis
Amino Acids Analysis (plasma or urine) is a quick and convenient means of getting to the root of many chronic disorders. With the precise results provided by Amino Acids Analysis, nutritional deficits, metabolic impairments, and amino acid transport disorders can be accurately identified and corrected.

Gluten Allergy and Sensitivity Testing
Dr. Stengler can help you identify gluten allergy such as celiac disease or more subtle but important gluten sensitivity problems. This is done with blood and stool analysis.

Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis
An advanced noninvasive diagnostic tool that can help practitioners evaluate disorders of the digestive tract.

Comprehensive Cardiovascular Profile 2.0
This thorough evaluation features an advanced lipid profile with fractionation, independent risk markers (including homocysteine and hs-C-reactive protein), relative risk indices, and Metabolic Syndrome alerts.

Estrogen Metabolism Assessment
This test provides a focused overview of hormonal balance in both pre-and post-menopausal women, using a single serum sample to evaluate dynamics of sex steroid metabolism that can profoundly affect a woman’s health throughout her lifetime. Modulation of hormonal balance in women is strongly linked to the genetic expression of aging and disease.

Women’s Hormonal Health Assessment
This profile has important applications in the prevention and treatment of the most common and the most critical health conditions facing women, including PMS, Perimenopause, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Dysmenorrhea, Fibrocystic Breast Disease, Sexual Dysfunction, Breast Cancer, Heart Disease, Dementia, and Osteoporosis.

Food Sensitivity and Food Allergy
Dr. Stengler uses tests that measure food and chemical sensitivity/intolerances. One such test is the ALCAT. ALCAT company describes this test: "The ALCAT Test differs from other food allergy or intolerance tests as it accurately and objectively measures leukocyte cellular reactivity in whole blood, which is a final common pathway of all mechanisms. The test utilizes electronic, state of the art, hematological instrumentation. Standard allergy tests, such as skin testing or RAST are not accurate for delayed type reactions to foods and chemicals. They measure only a single mechanism, such as the effect of mast cell release of histamine or the presence of allergen specific IgE molecules. Delayed reactions to foods and chemicals are NOT IgE mediated.

The ALCAT Test also differs from standard IgG tests in that they rely exclusively on one immune pathway, serum levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG). In fact, high food specific IgG titers are indicative only of exposure, not necessarily intolerance. The ALCAT Test reproducibly measures the final common pathway of all pathogenic mechanism; whether immune, non-immune, or toxic. It is the only test shown to correlate with clinical symptoms by double blind oral challenges, the gold standard."

Also, computerized testing is available that measures hundreds of food and environmental sensitivity testing. No pain is involved. This test is not used to diagnose or treat disease or replace conventional allergy testing.

Toxic Element Analysis
Each sample analysis (hair, blood, or urine) offers a unique vantage point for assessing element status in the body. The clinician can quickly pinpoint and treat toxic and nutrient imbalances that may be contributing to chronic fatigue, depression, hyperactivity (children), “foggy” brain, autism, stress, thyroid problems and many other health conditions.

Essential and Metabolic Fatty Acids
This Analysis helps to quickly diagnose and correct imbalances associated with conditions such as cardiovascular disease, pregnancy, hyperactivity, rheumatoid arthritis, depression, and many others.

Intestinal Permeability
The small intestine has the dual function of being a digestive/absorptive organ for nutrients as well as a powerful barrier against the excessive absorption of bacteria, food antigens and large molecules. A number of clinical disorders are associated with either increased or decreased intestinal permeability.

Nutrient Assessment
Dr. Stengler uses the ION (Individual Optimal Nutrition) Profile. This is a combination of analyses that measures levels of organic acids, fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

Oxidative Stress Profile
This measures oxidative stress at the cellular level which results from many factors, including exposure to alcohol, medications, trauma, cold, toxins or radiation.

Cellular Energy Profile
This test can reveal metabolic distress associated with generalized pain and fatigue, which may arise in response to toxic exposure, nutrient imbalances, digestive dysfunction and other causes.

Bone Resorption Assessment
This urine test measures bone turnover. Using the two most specific markers of bone resorption, the Bone Resorption Assessment measures bone loss accurately and inexpensively.
