VIDEO: HOW DO PHYTOCHEMICALS FIGHT CANCER

Plant foods are the source of phytochemicals, the naturally occurring plant chemicals that fight cancer and other diseases.

Hi everyone. In this video I'm going to talk about how phytochemicals fight cancer. Plant foods are the source of phytochemicals, the naturally occurring plant chemicals that fight cancer and other diseases. They're a big reason why research has shown an association between plant foods and a decreased risk of several cancers. Lab studies have shown that phytochemicals have the ability to do the following. Stimulate the immune system, block the ability of substances we eat drink and breathe that cause cancer. Reduce the kinds of inflammation that makes cancer growth more likely. Prevent DNA damage and help with DNA repair. Reduce the kind of oxidative damage to cells that can spark cancer. They slow the growth rate of cancer cells and they trigger damaged cells to commit suicide. We know it as apoptosis, before they can reproduce. They also help to regulate hormones. So I recommend you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Seven to nine servings a day gives you good protection and juicing is one way you can achieve this goal. So here on the screen is an excellent chart from the American Institute for Cancer Research on Cancer fighting phytochemicals. You can see the carotenoids found in red orange and green fruits and vegetables. You see the flavonoids such as you find an apples, citrus fruits, onions, soy beans, coffee and tea. The indoles in glucosinolates which you find in cruciferous vegetables. Inositol which is found in bran from corn, oats, rice, rye and wheat, nuts, soy. Then you have the isoflavones you probably have heard about again found in soy products. The isothiocynates again found and cruciferous vegetables, and then the polyphenols you find in foods such as green tea, grapes, wine, berries, citrus fruits, apples and whole grains. And then we have the terpenes which you find very specifically and cherries, citrus fruit peel and Rosemary. So you can see how these diverse amount of foods contain phytochemicals which help you to fight cancer.
