The arrival of a new baby is one of life’s greatest miracles – but the journey to that day can be an emotional roller coaster. One in seven women suffer from depression at some point during their pregnancy, and in most cases doctors are quick to offer a prescription drug. But new research in the journal Molecular Psychiatry shows just one reason why that’s a huge mistake: Children born to moms given antidepressants during pregnancy are more likely to develop ADHD. Antidepressant drugs can also lead to developmental delays, pregnancy-induced hypertension and preeclampsia and even miscarriage. For depression during pregnancy, I recommend fish oil, B vitamins, and homeopathic remedies as well as acupuncture instead.
