Dementia Linked To Diabetes, Depression & Low Folate

We all suffer from the occasional “brain fart” as we get older, but mild cognitive impairment is another story altogether. In some cases, it could be the first and only warning sign that you’re at risk for dementia. But if you have MCI, don’t panic. Take action instead, because many of the risk factors that can turn MCI into dementia are within your control. According to a new study in the American Journal of Psychiatry, diabetes, depression, low levels of folate and heavy drinking can all speed the progression of MCI into dementia. On the other hand, the study also finds a simple way to cut your dementia risk, especially if you already have MCI – and that’s to switch to a Mediterranean diet. Given those risk factors, that makes perfect sense. The Mediterranean diet is full of the healthy fats and nutrients that can prevent or reverse depression and keep blood sugar under control to prevent diabetes. It’s also naturally high in folate-rich foods such as beans and leafy greens. Whatever you do, don’t wait. Nearly half of all patients with MCI are diagnosed with dementia within three years, so the time to act to save your brain is right now.
