Service Highlight: Gluten Allergy & Sensitivity Testing

The Stengler Center for Integrative Medicine provides testing for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity.

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the gluten particles and then cross reacts with the tissues of the digestive tract. Gluten is a protein found in grains like wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. When someone reacts to gluten, it damages the fingerlike projections (known as villi) of the small intestine responsible for absorption of food and nutrients. This leads to the malabsorption of foods and nutrients, and the end result is nutritional deficiencies. While similar, celiac disease is different from gluten sensitivity. Non-celiac gluten sensitivity produces many of the same or similar symptoms as celiac disease, but is not an autoimmune disorder, and typically is not as severe.

What are Symptoms of Celiac Disease?

70% of celiac disease sufferers go undiagnosed because the expected symptoms of celiac disease don't appear at all. They may instead appear as other, more common symptoms, which leads many doctors to misdiagnose a celiac disease sufferer. Typical symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea and weight loss. However, more people have symptoms like:

  • Fatigue
  • Digestive upset (gas, bloating, etc.)
  • Migraines headaches
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Hair Loss
  • Bone and muscle pain
  • Poor memory
  • Anemia
  • Autoimmune conditions

...And many more. If you have any of these symptoms and can't explain their cause, call us today at the Stengler Center for gluten allergy and sensitivity testing.
